Jon S., this is what you get for posting Van Halen's "Why Can't This Be Love?" with Sammy Hagar on your video blog.
I'm admitting along with The Police, The Rolling Stones, Blondie and the J. Geils Band I used to listen to JOURNEY. Their sound brings back childhood memories--being in a theme park in New Jersey and everyone (except me) wearing black shirts with a band name on it, blue jeans and white rubber shoes, or of a pizza joint / pinball arcade in Mamaroneck, NY with this song blasting out of the sound system while pre-pubescents were watching their video game heroes at the console.
Yes I did buy the ESCAPE cassette. And this song was my favorite.
Complete flash forward and some Filipino cover band singer is now the new lead singer of Journey and not only that, I heard this song plays in the background in the very last scene of the "Sopranos" run. I couldn't resist using this version from YouTube. I believe it is one of the videos that sold the band on one Arnel Pineda. Say what you want but the first few seconds I was pretty sold too!
Don't stop believin' Hold on to the feeeelin'
Oh and Kat L., this is your doing too for sending me that story of the visa man at the US Embassy.
 | Jon, you're such a bad influence, see? Hahahahaha. Good one, Karen :) |
 | well, yes, Katrina did send me the email too. THe story will be a classic, especially if Journey's latest reincarnation brings (more) glory days. The hair stood on my arms hearing Arnel Pineda sing this....no audio-visual connect, but OMG the voice is there!!!!
I wonder how he'll do songwriting, though.
As for Jon- I want a night out with him to entertain me with his Skid Row etc (with sing along ha). If I have a slow night at Oar, maybe I'll borrow his ipod and plug it in heeheee....
Though I must pass on Bon Jovi. |
 | and I'm glad to hear this was your favorite Journey song. Somehow I can't picture you going all senti to Open Arms.... Bwahahahahaha. |
 | Open Arms, would that be the ultimate power ballad? But no, not quite me.
"Some will win, some will lose Some are born to sing the blues..."
dontstop
|
 | I'm not sure how I feel about being partly to blame for this glam rock/power ballad roll! ;-)
I remember Tom telling me about when his friends said they'd each admit one embarrassing thing about themselves. Tom said, very sheepishly, "I like Journey!" Everyone was quiet for a second, then another guy goes, "I like them, too!" I mean, c'mon, wouldn't almost anyone who grew up in the 80s like Journey at least a little? Which is my segue to...
Last Saturday night at Route, when it came time for jamming and requests, we asked for Journey! And, yes, despite the through-the-roof cheese factor of "Open Arms," we enthusiastically sang along. What alcohol can do... ;-) |
 | true, everyone knows the song. gah. I miss the ene and the ronnies.
I did a dose of baduy hahahahaha. |
 | whoops. need a dose, i'm duling na. |
 | Wheel In the Sky.. awesome :) |
 | Through the roof cheese indeed!
I'd take that over requesting Depeche Mode's "Somebody" any day. Depeche Mode has an amazing body of work and it breaks my heart when people just want to hear "Somebody."
And OK, I guess for people who used to listen to Journey, it's safe to come out of the closet now?
|
 | damn,i still have their escape, frontiers, and raise on the radio on glorious vinyl!who can forget steve perry shaving while on tour in the vid of faithfully!lol, and long before countless of em showbands got their copy of steve perry's street talk,i was bangin my head to oh sherrie and strung out.even bought the 7" of survivor's "high on you",just coz steve co-wrote and sung back up on it!album oriented rock (what radio programmers categorised 'em) is still as respectable today despite what the nirvana shirt says (corporate rock still sucks).finally, they're genuinely more emotional than what is pass off as "emo" today (eeewmo!the new corporate rock?).okay, thats it karen dear,im out of the closet!lol xoxo |
 | Strangely enough, I do believe they used Journey music, particularly this one as background for one of the rides at the amusement park.
Wheel in the sky keeps on turnin' I don't know where Ill be tomorrow Wheel in the sky keeps on turnin'
Cheers! |
 | Man, let's not forget the pants they wore (from the Adolfo Pirelli school?).
I am glad they are wearing more comfortable pants that breathe a bit more now.
What IS Steve Perry doing these days anyway? |
 | I am too.
I'm actually a bit partial to the edgier songs in Songs of Faith and Devotion (did I get that right?)
FM - "...no static at all..."
The soundtrack of our lives plays with the memories in our heads, Anabel. Don't you just love MUSIC? |
 | I love Depeche Mode (watched their concert when they came, and was THRILLED)! I used to relate to "Somebody" as a teenager, so I have many memories surrounding it and understand why people request it. But I wouldn't say it represents the band, or what they're capable of. "Songs of Faith and Devotion" is my favorite DM album too, Karen. Dark, lush, moody, atmospheric, SEXY. I went to the concert with a guy who'd never even heard any post-80s DM songs, but when I sang the lyrics for him during the show, he was very turned on. |
 | I'm partial to Lights... love that song. |
 | It is very atmospheric and sexy. I had the cassette too, way back when. But I also liked their early early early work when they first came out. Speak and Spell was my first. And who can forget Tora Tora Tora from the very early 80's and "Get the Balance Right." Must have been 1982 when I first heard that.
Straight down the middle until next Thursday. |
 | I remember we had Escape on cassette tape and I liked Don't Stop Believing a lot. We didn't have Raised on Radio, but by this time I was a radio junkie and Y101fm Cebu played a lot of their songs so I didn't feel the need to buy the album. I liked Suzanne and I'll Be Alright Without You. |
 | Lots of fun that concert.
I rushed to the front. Loved the ANTON CORBIJN background images!!! I thought that was a big kicker for the concert.
And well, I "reached out and touched Dave"
Too bad wala pang digicams, di may memories na tayo to share beyond the verbal. |
 | "Those crazy nights I do remember In my youth I recall those were the best times most of all." (Note: for full effect, must be sung along with air guitar actions.) |
 | If only I could manage a time warp for us all, ey? |
 | haha, thats oldskool!thats "wheel in the sky" off their 1978 lp "infinity"! |
 | Isn't that the year Skylab fell? |
 | Man, let's not forget the pants they wore (from the Adolfo Pirelli school?).
I am glad they are wearing more comfortable pants that breathe a bit more now.
What IS Steve Perry doing these days anyway? |
 | BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! :-)) |
 | i have to check on that, hehe are u implying that journey caused the damn skylab to fall? lol.whats for sure was its the start of the post punk years in the uk,and the anti-disco movement in the usa. |
 | Silent night, hear me calling...ha ha ha ha!
Panalo pa rin yung red jacket with coattails! |
