NazgulQueen's Corner of Mordor

"The trunk of the car looked like a mobile police narcotics lab. We had two bags of grass, seventy five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers...and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls."

"The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge."

+++

"Our vibrations were getting nasty--but why? I was puzzled, frustrated. Was there no communication in this car? Had we deteriorated to the level of dumb beasts?"

Kids, DO NOT try this on your road trips this summer.

And yes that is a pot-bellied Benicio del Toro and hitchiking blonde (but balding on top) Tobie Maguire.

I miss Hunter S. Thompson as well I think he is one of few people who embody being both a true genius and a madman.

His dying wish was to have his ashes shot out of a cannon. Johnny Depp made sure he got it.

I love when the persona of Raoul Duke tries to smack the hallucinated bats with a flyswater.

Depp and Del Torro are making HST's "The Rum Diary"

Wouldn't trust anyone else with the material! Ha ha ha.

I've actually been reading a lot of other HST essays--except I think a good deal would require a familiarity with the American socio-political landscape of the late sixties / seventies to be fully appreciated. Despite being somewhat removed from that, I still enjoy his "gonzo" journalism and his observations of the world around him--brilliant, insane, utterly rebellious. He's a true ORIGINAL.

i understood the whole process of American Presidential nominations and electrions through his book "fear and loathing on the campaign trail 1972", i was laughing so hard while reading "hell's angels" and of course Fear and loathing in Las Vegas....one of his last book "Hey Rube" was all about different essays he'd written for ESPN so its about sports mostly...

Which of Hunter S. Thompson's books have you read? I have this great condensed audio book version with Harry Dean Stanton reading Raoul Duke aka HST. I remember falling asleep to that in the background and waking up having very very strange dreams.

Another thing I like is Ralph Steadman's artwork for HST's work. The ink drips, the unsteady lines, the bug-eyes, he just truly captures the mad essence of "Gonzo." (In a strange way though I felt that if Tim Burton were too lazy to do some of his Sweeney Todd sketches, Ralph Steadman could have done some crazy stuff for that too),

Gotta bump off the next book on my reading list and take in at least a few HST essays.

What happens when a young elven hero goes on a hellacious drug binge and high tails it out into the desert? Here's an 8-bit theater version of the same scene. Very surreal.

I should make one of these but the trunk would contain: 18 pints Sebastian's Chocoholics anonymous, 1 thermos each of Xocoberrini and After Eight chocolate martinis from Xocolat, a dozen packs of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, 2 pounds of See's roasted almonds dipped in dark chocolate, 8 packs of dark chocolate Kit Kat, 2 grilled ham and cheese sandwiches and 3 Johnny Depp movies.

Road trip!
