for everyone
Category:Movies
Genre: Horror
It's Christmas and Halloween in the New Year. At least for me.

The film is absolutely stunning and gorgeous. Gargoyles, and gray skies and red and black eyeliner. A difficult, dark, yet masterful and beautiful score. Fine, fine gothic flavored period costumes the way only Coleen Atwood (frequent Tim Burton collaborator) could do them, stunning cinematography by Darius Wolski (Pirates of the Caribbean), a great cast. Sascha "Borat" Baron Cohen has incredible moments on screen and he deserves special mention because not everyone can steal moments away from Johnny Depp.

Absolute cinematic fireworks.

To fellow Tim Burton fans Eddie Boy Escudero and Apol Santamaria, I can't wait for you to feast your senses on this one.

No one's gonna harm you, not while I'm arouuund.

Haha I love Helena and Johnny. I loved the movie. And the songs too! Haha. Amazing movie, great black and white feel to it. And the blood! Ok, ok no spoilers. Cheers.

I watched the premiere here in Vancouver, and there were goths in period dress in line with us (top hats and tails and fishnet stockings) fun times.

Did you take photographs of the goths?

I did show up in something violet and gothic and period inspired too. I had fun dressing up. Gosh I remember going dancing at this goth club or this club that had a goth night in Vancouver. I think the place was called Twilight Zone? It was amazing to be a clubful of goths with great music. The funny part was that it was 1995 and near closing time they shifted from the Nine Inch Nails to--the surf punk theme song of Pulp Fiction. All the goths stopped dancing for 3 seconds, heard it, got a bit disoriented and went right back to their dancing.

I'm glad to hear you LOOOOOVED it! Fangirl.

See you on Wednesday. Do we dress up? We'll take more pictures.

By the way, I wore a tribute to Katrina--black and violet--for the show last night.

He just needs to go here or I just need to get sent to interview him next time he's in Asia.

Or Lily-Rose just needs to meet Vince (so he can fulfill his destiny).

Hello New York!!!

Nope, no cameras allowed, since it was a premiere. Sigh. Still. Mall of Asia's Imax and Greenbelt 3's Cinema kicks vancouver cinema's butt any day.

The goths here are nice but scary. I know one or two, but sometimes when i talk to them their piercings catch my attention and i stop hearing what they say, mentally cringing instead. I know, i know, it's rude. But pierced cheeks really look painful. Like a train wreck, i can't look away. Haha. Manang na.

For me, it was BORAT'S Pirelli. He just took it through the roof! Good seeing you there too. I miss being part of a paper now.

Borat's hairdo and tight pants too!

ooh yeah borat in tights. priceless.

I haven't seen a pierced cheek in ages.

Good to know the goth scene is still alive in that city. Strange saying that. I've had people shout at me since forever saying "Goth is dead!" and I don't even bother to look because well, Goth IS Dead.

So, any word on whether Tim Burton and Johnny Depp will be doing DARK SHADOWS?

Are you a fan of Edward Gorey's work too?

And the flourish with which he twirls his cape--or unfurls the Italian flag!

It's the moustache twitch that slays me. Hah!

Goth... I knew some people who attempted to be goth in Fine Arts a few years back sa UP. Sad to say they had to drop it eventually. Medyo off kasi to see happy goths.

Edward Gorey... pardon my ignorance, no idea. :D hahaha.

Well I don't know if the site still exists but there was this old list of the different varieties of goth--parang ice cream and I think they would classify as "perkygoths."

Edward Gorey--children's book writer and illustrator. I'm sure you've seen some of his work. Whimsical lonely strangely funny and macabre.

How cold does it get in Vancouver this time of year? I just know it's pretty gorgeous around July--sunshine and hiking trails and sleeveless goths!

the weather here is odd. Seriously odd. Like sunny days are ALWAYS colder. and it snows for an hour and the snow stays for days but if it snows all night long in the morning it's gone. I just google weather'ed my home page so you have vancouver weather: 2 degrees manila weather: 33 degrees. I miss manila. Sigh.

You've been here? Whee! When?

I was reading this goth graphic novel, gloom cookie. I'm not sure if i like it though. Haha. There was a goth batman for a while right? How's manila?

OOOOhhh, definitely a must-see of the year. I wanna watch!!!!!! I want to get a copy of the soundtrack too. I remember Sweeney Todd in Jersey Girl when Ben Affleck's daughter chose it as her presentation piece for their school activity.....hehehe..

I learned about Edward Gorey several years ago, when Felipe and I happened to see "The Gashlycrumb Tinies" during a Fully Booked sale. It's like a goth alphabet book! We were so charmed by it that we had to buy it. Later, I found out how famous he is. I heard his books were the inspiration for The Addams Family?

I'm excited for Wednesday! I really enjoyed "Sweeney Todd" when I saw the play eons ago, and the moment I heard Burton/Depp/Bonham-Carter were doing it, I knew it would be perfect! It's #5 on Time's best movies of 2007, so I'm confident it will be nominated for something, at the very least.

Would you be able to make the Wednesday Can't Wait Parley? There's are Friday and Sunday pending ones too--if you want to go with a group of fans. You'll enjoy it.

I think fans of Tim Burton would easily gravitate toward Edward Gorey and vice-versa.

I too found a stray Gorey book at a book sale long long ago (1995?) and whenever I would stumble upon a title of his (mostly at book sales and bargain book stands here there and everywhere) I would pick it up and take it home.

In what form did you see the play? I think the most common version prior to this one was one with Angela Lansbury.

I am hoping for more nominations as awards season gets underway. Pity there's no show--the year our Viggo and Johnny have nominations for very solid performances. Hay naku Katrina. How can they invite us for dinner if there is no dinner?

Bu__er.
lagkat wrote on Jan 11
Our Gorey book wasn't actually on sale; it was full-priced and not cheap, but we just had to have it. How lucky you are to have found yours for a bargain! :-)

I saw the Repertory Phils. production ages ago. Can't be sure who was in it, but if my memory serves me right, Miguel Faustmann and Baby Barredo.

What do you mean, there's no show? Is this because of the writers' strike? But then, how come there'll be a Golden Globes? They're already plugging it on TV.
lagkat wrote on Jan 11
By the way, as long as we're on the topic of twisted artists, in case you haven't seen the comments in my New Year's post:

Have you heard of the famous choreographer Matthew Bourne? He's done darker, alternative versions of Swan Lake and Nutcracker. My friend just told me about him, and when I looked him up I learned he did a ballet version of Edward Scissorhands! I saw the photos and I thought of you immediately! Wouldn't you love to see Johnny Depp onstage, on pointe?!
blackpearlphils wrote on Jan 11
No show because of the writers strike.

From what I gather, there will be big press con where the winners will be announced and that's it.

I have a few Goreys...all found from places like The Strand (in the Village) and would you believe long ago in The Sari Sari Store when it was in Greenbelt before it became the old MIX.

Golden Globes are scheduled for this weekend.

Text text nalang tayo kay Viggo.

Aww...I'm SO disappointed! Was looking forward to watching Viggo and Johnny on the shows. But much more than that, I feel really bad for Viggo -- he finally gets this kind of recognition, and there won't be a show to honor him. I also feel bad that "Eastern Promises" won't get the kind of media mileage award shows give, and that it so deserves. :-(
blackpearlphils wrote on Jan 11
Well Kat, we can make and present our own award to Viggo to honor his outstanding achievements in film the past year. And then invite him over--to Sagada or Boracay or somewhere off the beaten track here and present it to him.

We promise not to go on strike.
