I've been doing this every August for the last 10 years with my former co-worker Cristina Peczon. She moved to the States the last year but her work for the orphanage continues. So the pledges and money are in. Truth is Vince and I were pretty stoked to go on a boat trip with Katrina, Felipe and Isabelle over the weekend. But on Friday, while skies were still clear, we got a NO GO from the Coast Guard. The venue was done up to look and feel gothic. 2. The aircon was working absolutely fine. 3. Lee and I thought the ground pork over the grilled eggplant at the Khmer Family Restaurant was the best dish we sampled. We tried the curries, the cheeses and lemongrass fried chicken, Khmer fried rice, soup. We have yet to sample the famous fish "amoc." Again, always leaving something for next time. Then there's the Old Market to explore, and the little town around it with a couple of bars and the notorious "Happy Pizza" place which I didn't visit because: Lee wanted to sample as many Khmer dishes as she could and I had to renew my license upon returning to Manila. This pirate doesn't want a Black Spot at the Landlubbers Transportation office. Visiting the Tonle Sap Lake is also worthwhile to how people on the floating villages live. What was aplenty was craftsmanship, spirituality, history, culture, foliage and wonders. Here are shots of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayon, Ta Prohm and the temple of the Snake Lady. It's easier for me to deal with someone who admits they're not having the best day, that they're feeling sick, that something is wrong, that they've got a hidden agenda, that they're imperfect or scarred somewhere.  That they feel strange, alone, manic or depressive.  And it may be tough to swallow initially but I'd appreciate it more if you told something I didn't want to hear but at the same time something you genuinely felt.  I have a few close friends who are like that and I'm really glad I do.  They put me in my place and keep me on my toes in a good way. At least for me. The film is absolutely stunning and gorgeous. Gargoyles, and gray skies and red and black eyeliner. A difficult, dark, yet masterful and beautiful score. Fine, fine gothic flavored period costumes the way only Coleen Atwood (frequent Tim Burton collaborator) could do them, stunning cinematography by Darius Wolski (Pirates of the Caribbean), a great cast. Sascha "Borat" Baron Cohen has incredible moments on screen and he deserves special mention because not everyone can steal moments away from Johnny Depp. Absolute cinematic fireworks.
