The Boys of Summer: The Men of Pyrate Con '08

I must love a pirate's life a lot--believe it or not, I was actually sick throughout Pyrate Con '08 (I was prone to getting tired really easily and didn't get myself checked 'til I got back to Manila and the condition was growing worse, anyway, saw a doctor and feeling a lot better and more energetic). Despite all that, I still managed to meet a lot interesting chaps, I really wish I had a check up before I left--I'm imagining the damage I could have inflicted on the French Quarter with these fellas had I been 100% healthy!!!

Anyway, I thought Isaac Singleton (Barbossa's Bosun in Curse of the Black Pearl) was the biggest sweetheart in the world, I absolutely loved hanging out with him--walking the Quarter, chatting in the girls' room, having chocolate and beignets and Cafe du Monde. I totally hope I can see him again and invite him to visit Manila!

Mystery Jack popped into the room at something like 1am, I opened the door and he hung out with us for about half an hour. When he...

Yes, It's TRUE - Boxing in Boracay: Karengkeng VS. Monkey Pacquiao

Boracay is cheap during the off season. I was there last weekend with Vincent and Vannie who followed two days after. This happened during the ATV adventure Vannie and I went on. On top of Mt. Luho aka Mt. Lubak.

Here's Vannie's link if you want to see the monkey

Pirates Off Duty: Prelude to a Storm + The Dalmas Meet Matthew Fox

Starring: Salma Hayek, Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Matthew Fox, Lisa Loeb, Angelina Jolie (at age 16), Scary Spice, Rockstars and Hooters Girls.

Truth is Vince and I were pretty stoked to go on a boat trip with Katrina, Felipe and Isabelle over the weekend. But on Friday, while skies were still clear, we got a NO GO from the Coast Guard.

This only meant I could stay until Wawi's event at Teatrino: Nokia Rock Playlist ended. Monique and I headed over together for this one. There were so many great things about the event:

1. The venue was done up to look and feel gothic.
2. The aircon was working absolutely fine.
3. The bands had great performances: Pedicab, Urbandub, The Dawn, Razorback (which killed it totally, we were on our feet the whole time) and Pepe Smith. Not to mention the backdrop lights and graphics show was pretty neat.
4. Saw lots of familiar faces in the audience.
5. UNLIMITED vodka, beer, iced tea and soda. Wawi, Monique and Lara all took advanta...

Siem Reap: "Pirate" of Tonle Sap, and Other Sights

Beyond the temples, there's all this sweet, spicy Khmer food. Lee and I thought the ground pork over the grilled eggplant at the Khmer Family Restaurant was the best dish we sampled. We tried the curries, the cheeses and lemongrass fried chicken, Khmer fried rice, soup. We have yet to sample the famous fish "amoc." Again, always leaving something for next time.

Then there's the Old Market to explore, and the little town around it with a couple of bars and the notorious "Happy Pizza" place which I didn't visit because: Lee wanted to sample as many Khmer dishes as she could and I had to renew my license upon returning to Manila. This pirate doesn't want a Black Spot at the Landlubbers Transportation office.

Visiting the Tonle Sap Lake is also worthwhile to how people on the floating villages live. Fishing is their main source of livelihood. During the rainier times of the year, the lake flows into the Mekong. Though the construction of dams in neighboring countries and a K...

Siem Reap: Contemplating the Temples

Move over Indiana Jones, Cambodia Kunawicz (that sounds horrid) sought treasure, chocolate and cuties in Siem Reap. What was aplenty was craftsmanship, spirituality, history, culture, foliage and wonders. Here are shots of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayon, Ta Prohm and the temple of the Snake Lady.

I have to go back--to chill out more and visit Banteay Srei (Citadel of the Women), a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva.

Amazing amazing amazing structures.

Real vs. Superficial

I recently wondered to myself which sort of person I'd prefer: one who is real kaso lang masungit or one who is superficial or fake nice. And all things considered, I figured I might as well take the real person--after having been burned, fooled and mislead by the "fake nices" of the world several times throughout the course of my lifetime.

It's easier for me to deal with someone who admits they're not having the best day, that they're feeling sick, that something is wrong, that they've got a hidden agenda, that they're imperfect or scarred somewhere. That they feel strange, alone, manic or depressive. And it may be tough to swallow initially but I'd appreciate it more if you told something I didn't want to hear but at the same time something you genuinely felt. I have a few close friends who are like that and I'm really glad I do. They put me in my place and keep me on my toes in a good way.

The fake nices I worry about, the ones who make like ...

U2 3D

Raise the roof and push the envelope! A fuller review will follow as U2 3D is the topic of my first column for the Manila Times since it temporarily closed in 1999.

My column, "Fangirl" appears each Thursday on the same day as Tim Tayag. This was such a fun experience, not to mention I watched it with people who were also getting such a big kick out of it. We did have to wait until it was nearly midnight as there were some technical difficulties in setting up rock and roll sensual assault.

U2 3D screens at the 8 storey tall SM IMAX THEATER and at SM North. My column appears on April 3rd.

Harry Connick, Jr. Eats Balut

There are so many reasons to love Harry Connick:

1. He's a MUSICIAN. Not just a singer. Played piano at age 3 and works closely with the boys in his Big Band--some of which he grew up with on Basin St. down in New Orleans. His types of music--jazz, blues and funk.

2. He's from New Orleans but unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to ask if he could take me back with him.

3. He's gwapo!

4. He's funny and kind of luko-luko.

5. He ate balut halfway through his show at the PICC!

This is the footage I was able to steal with my little TX1. In my heart, he's the one man Mardi

What Hunter Thompson Might Pack on a Road Trip ("Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" J. Depp)

"The trunk of the car looked like a mobile police narcotics lab. We had two bags of grass, seventy five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers...and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls."

"The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge."

+++

"Our vibrations were getting nasty--but why? I was puzzled, frustrated. Was there no communication in this car? Had we deteriorated to the level of dumb beasts?"

Kids, DO NOT try this on your road trips this summer.

And yes that is a pot-bellied Benicio del Toro and hitchiking blonde (but balding on top) Tobie

How To Overcome Addiction to Sebastian's Chilly Burgers

The chilly burger. Not a paltry tablespoon of vanilla ice cream between two mass produced cookies.

This is much like those chipwiches they sold in New York in the 80's (I wonder if they still do). Only fatter and more delectable.

The cookies (chocolate cookies and chocolate chip cookies) are home made by a friend of mine from the Philippine Tolkien Society named Rachel. And if they can pass muster with the hobbits who like to eat well and eat hearty and the elves with their high standards, they'll certainly do for me.

The gargantuan slab of ice cream in the middle--vanilla, chocoholics anonymous, chocolate macadamia, cookie dough (?) is by the one and only Sebastian.

The ice cream and cookies are either rolled in crushed nuts, crushed oreos, tiny chocolate chips or candy sprinkles.

Despite being a big fan of dark chocolate, my favorite Chilly Burger flavor is the classic with vanilla ice cream between two chocolate chip cookies rolled in nuts and tiny chocolate chips.

Unfortunately when I...

The Police Live at the Singapore Indoor Stadium Feb. 4, 2008

CATCHING THE POLICE
(Written for the Inquirer's Saturday Super Section 02.09.08)

There’s this euphoric, blissful, somewhat spiritual yet near orgasmic feeling you get when a dream comes true.

It happened when I swam with whale sharks and when I went on my first bungy jump. It happened again when I saw The Police on the 4th of February at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. “I’m here, I’m really here” I said to myself as the band walked onto the stage. There was not enough to time to philosophize however as I started screaming, singing and dancing to their opening song, “Message In A Bottle.”

The opening riffs were played and that was it. I knew I was going to have the experience of a lifetime.

The Affair Begins

I began my love affair with the Police when my cousin Alvaro would be playing his cassette of “Outlandos D’ Amour” and I’d sing along to “So Lonely” going “Salami, salami, salami…”

Then when Regatta De Blanc, Zenyatta Mondatta and Ghost in the Machine (the one w...

Don't Stop Believing: Cheeseballs, Journey's New Pinoy Lead Singer and Tony Soprano's Farewell

Jon S., this is what you get for posting Van Halen's "Why Can't This Be Love?" with Sammy Hagar on your video blog.

I'm admitting along with The Police, The Rolling Stones, Blondie and the J. Geils Band I used to listen to JOURNEY. Their sound brings back childhood memories--being in a theme park in New Jersey and everyone (except me) wearing black shirts with a band name on it, blue jeans and white rubber shoes, or of a pizza joint / pinball arcade in Mamaroneck, NY with this song blasting out of the sound system while pre-pubescents were watching their video game heroes at the console.

Yes I did buy the ESCAPE cassette. And this song was my favorite.

Complete flash forward and some Filipino cover band singer is now the new lead singer of Journey and not only that, I heard this song plays in the background in the very last scene of the "Sopranos" run. I couldn't resist using this version from YouTube. I believe it is one of the videos that sold the band on one Arnel Pined...

Staring at the Rain, Maddened by the Stars: The Darkness of Johanna Barker

She has that long yellow hair celebrated in the song "Johanna," she dresses in whites and creams and pretty blues, no dark gothic circles under her eyes.

She appears to be the perfect picture of girlish promise and innocence.

Yet such darkness dwells within.

Does Anthony really know what he is getting himself into?

Johanna, taken away from her parents at such a young age, then becoming the ward of the very man who destroyed any hope for happiness for herself and her parents Benjamin and Lucy Barker. Who knows what Judge Turpin did when he said he "offered himself to her" which caused her to show "reluctance?"

Johanna, sent to an asylum and then witnessing Sweeney Todd murder the madwoman--in truth her own father kill her mother.

When Anthony tells her you are safe now, she says (I can't remember the right words), "...the nightmares don't go away."

Oh Anthony, you are in for quite a ride with Johanna. May you always have a good therapist's name on your speed dial.

* * * * *

Below are the lyric...

Sweeney Todd

It's Christmas and Halloween in the New Year. At least for me.

The film is absolutely stunning and gorgeous. Gargoyles, and gray skies and red and black eyeliner. A difficult, dark, yet masterful and beautiful score. Fine, fine gothic flavored period costumes the way only Coleen Atwood (frequent Tim Burton collaborator) could do them, stunning cinematography by Darius Wolski (Pirates of the Caribbean), a great cast. Sascha "Borat" Baron Cohen has incredible moments on screen and he deserves special mention because not everyone can steal moments away from Johnny Depp.

Absolute cinematic fireworks.

To fellow Tim Burton fans Eddie Boy Escudero and Apol Santamaria, I can't wait for you to feast your senses on this

Me and Lisa Loeb (1996)

Hope this one gives you a good laugh!

I've been looking for this photo for quite a while. It was shot by Eddie Boy Escudero at the Shangri-La Hotel in Makati. Her Hard Rock Cafe show the same night was cancelled because the Mayor paddlocked the place.
